Iconic thousand red torii gates. Do the lower loop up to the Yotsutsuji viewpoint today; save the full summit hike for dawn on Day 3 when it's quieter and you're over jet lag. Open 24hrs, free entry.

Not up for it? Just walk the first few hundred metres of torii gates up to Okusha and turn back — that's the classic photo, no need to push on to Yotsutsuji if legs are tired from the flight.

¥500 admission, open till 18:00 — easy timing after Fushimi Inari. Wander the old sloped streets below the temple for matcha sweets shops.

Mountain railway to Gora, cablecar to Sounzan, ropeway over the Owakudani volcanic valley (black eggs boiled in the hot springs), then a pirate-ship cruise across Lake Ashi to the Hakone Shrine lake torii. Peak autumn foliage in November.
